Tips to stop spam

  • Spam is any unwanted, and unsolicted Email message.
  • This article is for individuals wishing to stop spam.
  • This article is aimed mainly at private computer users. Corporate schemes, and methods used by celebrities will have to be somewhat different.

Block Spam

  • Spam tends to obey certain patterns, which computer system filters can block out.
  • Most systems will allow you to mark spam as such, which will delete the message, and let the system block similar messages.
  • You should check spam folders occasionally to make sure desired messages are not deleted.
  • Spam blockers will usually not block messages from companies you have given your address to.

Filter spam

    • user defined filters can allow you to rapidly sort spam based on things you see which machines miss.
    • Most spam can be filtered away because it is addressed to someone other than yourself.
    • Often spam is marketing something, and repeat messages will have similar wording. Look for the common thread, and filter those words.
    • You can also filter based on who is sending you messages, but unless a company is the sender, this is rarely effective.

Protect your Address

  • Unless someone types in your email address, no spam will come to it.
  • Do not give your email address to businesses unless you want their mailers for the rest of your life.
  • Do not give email addresses out over the internet.
  • Do not give email addresses to strangers.
  • Do not type your email address onto a page that can be viewed by strangers.
  • If you want strangers to see your email address, replace the @ symbol with "(at)" or otherwise garble it so machines cannot copy and paste it.

Keep a spam address

  • It is usually possible to open one or more additional email accounts based on the email address you already have. Do so, and use it when doing so might send you spam.
  • If you need to give an email address to a website, or stranger for any reason, give them your spam address. Now they will spam that address, and not your favorite address.

DO NOT FEED THE SPAMMERS!

  • Spam continues to be sent out because it is easy to send, and a few people somewhere continue to do what the spammers want, by buying their product, or visiting their website, thus giving them advertising money, or a chance to upload malicious software. This makes spamming cost-effective.
  • The less cost-effective spamming is, the fewer products spamers will be able advertise this way.
  • Never follow a link in a spamm message. Spammers will then know your email address is active, and can sell it to other spammers for money.
  • Never download any picture or file from a spam message. It can contain malicious software.
  • Never open a message that is clearly spam. Some spammers may know simply by this.
  • Never write back to a spammer. They will know your email is active, and will sell it for money.
  • If a spammer advertises a product that you want, reward a company that hasn't spammed you by purchasing from them instead.
