Why Home Study?

  • You stay in control of your study time and your learning environment and can go at your own pace.
  • You are free to fit study time in with family needs. Whereas, if you enrol at a local college, you will have to fit in with their timetables and term times.
  • Studying at home is less stressful.

Start and finish your course when it suits you

  • Most college courses start each September, but when you study at home you can begin your course whenever it suits you.
  • You can take your time to learn in small steps - or you can devote more time to it to finish earlier and get on with looking for your new job.

Select your Course

  • What type of work you want to do? For example, do you prefer to deal with people or technology?
  • Your course selection should also consider whether you want to work as an employee or whether you want to take the plunge and work for yourself.
  • If you are going to work for yourself, you will find it very helpful to understand bookkeeping and finance!

Stay in control

  • When you study as an adult, you may sometimes find that the family's needs have to come before your studies. But when you are studying at home, you can easily put your family first and set your studies aside for a while.
  • Go back to them when things settle down and resume exactly where you left off.
  • Taking the decision to study at home for a new qualification is almost certainly going to affect your family life in some way, especially if you have children.
  • One of the best ways to make sure that you get your time to study without neglecting the family's needs is to talk to them about your plans.
  • Get together as a family and explain that you are doing this course to help all of you have a better life together. It will help children understand why, for example, you need to shut yourself away from them in another room to study.
  • Even quite young children can understand when you take the time to explain things; and to older children, it’s just someone else in the house doing homework.
  • As a reward for their co-operation and support - and for your hard work – plan some treats along the way as you study. When you complete an assignment go for a pizza or to see a movie.
  • The most important thing is that you stick to your studies and get that life-changing qualification.
