Most of the H1 workers in USA brings their spouse on H4 or dependent via.
You cannot now a days apply for a SSN if you are on a dependent visa. But what you can do is get a Tax Identification Number or in short TIN. You must need this number in order to file in your taxes.

What is an ITIN (from IRS web site) An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX. IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA). ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have U.S. tax return and payment responsibilities under the Internal Revenue Code. Individuals must have a filing requirement and file a valid federal income tax return to receive an ITIN, unless they meet an exception

Driving & Driver's License ID

Next important thing to start working on is getting a driver's license.
Not only it allows you to be on the road behind the wheels. Also it is very useful to keep handy as a form of photo ID.

Walk through

This Tip is not official though crucial enough to live here.
A quick walk through around your apartment and house is necessary to explain various utility and controls around your residence. They may seem obvious to you but for a new comer for example changing a temperature in thermostat could be challenging. What are main outlet what needs to do during emergency etc. These could result into separate articles in itself.
Similarly one need to be taught of all exists and how to operate them in case of emergency. For example some company sponsored apartment could have fire extinguisher etc.
