Tips

Furniture

  • There is usually wiggle room for bigger ticket items such as sofas, dining room sets, and mattresses.
  • Don't expect stores like Macys/Crate&Barrel/Pottery Barn to negotiate, but the smaller, more expensive stores almost

always are up for price adjustments.

  • Try this: "We love this couch but we just finished remodeling and have only $600 to spend". Always start at your lowest

price and see what happens....

Clothes

  • Boutique owners always have room to negotiate the price, just be polite in your efforts.
  • Larger department stores are less flexible but try asking: "When is the next sale? Can you call me when it goes on

sale?".

  • A lot of times the sales person will say it's about ready to go on sale so I'll just give you the best price. Remember,

it never hurts to try.

Home Repairs

  • Try paying with cash or cheque. Paying with credit cards can cost contractors a 5% transaction fee to right off the bat,

there's a 5% savings.

  • Be up front and ask "what's the best price you can give me? I'm in no hurry to get the work done so let me know". You'll

be surprised that the lack of urgency can help the contractor lower his price right on the spot!

Maintain Chart

  • Maintain a chart with your income and expenses month to month, and have it in a visible place: don't hide it!

Check List

  1. Cash
  2. Cheque
  3. Anticipating your needs
  4. Researching value
