Protection from psychos

  • You never know who you might run into, so a lot of people I know keep a baseball bat in their trunk. Good idea? NO WAY
    • In an emergency, is a crazy, violent person going to let you walk over to the trunk?
    • After you've fought someone off with your baseball bat, you'll have to explain to the police why you had it in your car. Going to a game? Ever play?
      • A mag light under the front seat is likely to be a lot more effective, and useful in many other situations, like helping another driver in the dark.
      • You can also use the club to protect your car from thieves, and, if you ever have to, as a real club.
      • If you're afraid of someone coming at you while you're near your trunk, there are plenty of big wrenches that can be used in car-trouble emergencies, and will be more effective than a bat anyway.
      • Where is a crazy person going to come from anyway? Nowhere you want to be! So be sure you have useful maps in your car, and that way you won't need to stop for directions someplace seedy.
      • If you have reason to believe a more substantial threat might come at you in your car, consider pepper spray. It's available in most sporting good stores, comes in all sizes, and should give you enough time to drive off. Also, many states make it a legal nightmare to have a gun in your car.

Discouraging attackers

  • Most cars have a rear shelf under the back seat. You can put a hat there to make people think maybe someone is sleeping in the back.
  • Surplus army jackets are cheap, and can be draped over a seat to make you look tough. They also come in handy if you need to fix something under the car without ruining your clothes.
  • Fold the front seats of two door cars forward. People will think you've got more passengers coming.
  • Don't beep your alarm to find your car. When you do, a hijacker now knows where your car is, and that your keys are in your hand.
  • Leave your keys in your hand until you get right to the car, so nobody knows to grab them.
  • Park in well lit areas.

Keeping your car safe

  • Never leave valuables in plain sight in your car. Stash them in the trunk, below a seat, under a jacket, in the glove box, whatever.
  • Never leave the car's pink slip in the glove compartment.
  • Park in a garage whenever you can.

Prepare for emergencies

  • Keep a fire extinguisher under the front seat in case you need to put out a fire.
  • Have some old clothes handy in case you need to work on the car.
  • Get jumper cables, or keep a jump starter charged and ready to use.
  • have snow chains if you're likely to need them.
  • Get a little shovel. You never know when you might need to dig your car out of a snow drift, mud puddle, or sand dune.
  • Have the tools to take off your own lug nuts, and keep at least one spanner wrench and a screwdriver in the car.
  • Store your cell phone in your pocket. In an accident, things will go flying everywhere.

Drive safely

  • Turn signals are for turning off roads, changing lanes, and turning at intersections.
  • Check over your shoulder, and in all mirrors before changing lanes. Make sure someone in the opposite lane isn't trying to change into the same spot too.
  • Don't forget to check for pedestrians at intersections. They don't signal what they're going to do!
  • Make sure your windshield wipers aren't too old to work well.
