General ATM safety tips
- All ATM's have Braille either on the ATM keypad itself or beside the ATM keypad for the vision impaired. Some also have different tones for the buttons, or a headphone jack. If this is needed, use the headphone jack instead.
- Use familiar ATMs in preference to unfamiliar ones. You will be better able to recognize anything unusual, you will have a better knowledge of escape routes if necessary, and you will know if there is a service charge.
- Inspect the ATM machine for signs of tampering, and look around for suspicious activity. Leave if anything is out of the ordinary.
- Stand close to the ATM. Use your body to block other's view of the screen.
- Please stand several feet away from the ATM when others are using it, to avoid looking suspicious.
- Never share your PIN with anyone, not even friends or family. Change your PIN if someone else learns what it is.
- If the machine prints you a reciept, take it, and do not throw it away anywhere near the ATM. Scam artists may be able to use it to steal your personal information.
- Be sure to end the transaction, get your card, and check that the balance information is correct before leaving the ATM.
- If using an ATM at night, be sure to do so in a well-lit area where others are likely to be within earshot. Park as close to the ATM as possible. If possible bring a friend, or come prepared for possible trouble. Use similar precautions if using an ATM in a dangerous or unfamiliar area.

Improve security
- Encourage your bank to install visible security cameras in all their ATMs. These help to reduce fraud.
- Encourage your bank to require that the machine asks for the +3 digits on the back of the card.
- Complain to the banks, and city officials if you find an ATM in an area with poor visibility, lousy parking, or insufficient light at night.
